A Personal Touch

The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense. Proverbs 27:9

Joe, my friend and former colleague, is making a huge difference in the workplace. Joe has not forgotten the importance of personal touch through communication. Rather than sending emails to encourage, congratulate, well-wish, etc., Joe takes time to send hand-written personal notes and cards to employees scattered throughout the country. I have heard many testimonies from colleagues that Joe’s personal words of encouragement came just at the right time. But isn’t that how God works? He knows what we need and when we need it…His timing is perfect. God has used Joe on numerous occasions to personally touch, encourage and bless many people.

Personal handwritten notes grow rarer by the day. In fact, according to a US Postal service 2011 survey, the average home only received a personal letter once every seven weeks, down from once every two weeks in 1987; and that doesn’t include greeting cards and invitations. Emails, tweets, texts and FB messages are essentially costless and have become an easier, more convenient form of communication. To sit, write a note, address the envelope, apply a stamp and deliver it to the mailbox takes time and effort. But for the recipient, it is a powerful and sincere expression that someone cares.

Jesus, the Promised Messiah, came to earth and brought His personal touch to a world in need. In fact, the gospels are filled with accounts of Jesus personally touching the lives of others. He also left us His Word as a personal love letter. It was written to meet us at our greatest need and to communicate that He cares for us. In the same way, writing a personal note is tangible evidence that someone is thinking of you and cares for you.

Your workplace challenge is to send more personal, handwritten notes. Start by sending one per week with a goal of sending one per day.  Write a note of condolence, congrats, get-well, Happy Birthday or simply a word to encourage.  God is faithful and He will guide you to who needs your personal touch and what needs to be written. Do it today for His Glory!
